Docents and ushers

Never let sunlight hit the lenses. The lenses focus it onto the screens and burn them, and that headset is ruined, even after a few seconds. Keep headsets away from windows and out of the sun, and put them down lenses-down or covered.

How to run Glass Angels on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. A session takes about 15 minutes.

Checked against the festival build on 12 October 2026. If the headset does something different from this page, go with the headset and tell Deac.

Before the doors open

  1. Charge every headset fully.
  2. Check where the sun comes in. Set up charging and resting spots where sunlight never reaches the headsets, at any time of day.
  3. On each headset, open Apps → Unknown Sources → Glass Angels and check it reaches the black start screen with Begin. If there is also an app called “Owl House”, it is an old build. Don't use it.
  4. Put fresh, fully charged batteries in the controllers. Push each battery in firmly: a loose battery makes a controller drop out.
  5. Clip the spare battery pack to the back of the head strap and plug the headset into it (cable at the back). This keeps it topped up all day.
  6. Keep one pair of controller batteries on the charger at all times. Swap them in regularly.
  7. Check the start screen settings on each headset: Standing or Sitting, and Subtitles on. The headset remembers them between visitors.

Fitting the visitor

  1. Ask if they want to sit or stand. On the start screen, under Begin, choose Standing or Sitting. Point the controller's laser at the word and pull the trigger (index finger).
  2. “Standing” means the visitor is standing. If someone sits down while it's set to Standing, they will feel about 50 cm too short. Switch to Sitting.
  3. Subtitles are on by default. To turn them off, choose Subtitles off on the start screen (also in the pause menu). Helen's own voice is not subtitled.
  4. Fit the headset, then the controllers with wrist straps on. Set the volume with the buttons on the underside of the headset.
  5. Ask them to point at Begin and pull the trigger. Before Begin they can look around but can't move.

Controls in one breath

“Squeeze the grip under your middle finger to take the lantern. Hold the lantern up at eye level to walk, lower it to stop. You can also walk with the left stick. The right stick turns you. Bring the lantern close to a candle and point it at the candle to light it.”

  1. Grab: grip button, middle finger, either hand. Things to pick up: the lantern and the letter in the kitchen.
  2. Walk: raise the lantern to eye level (slow), or push the left stick (faster, also sideways and backwards).
  3. Turn: right stick, in steps. Or just turn your body.
  4. There is no teleport.
  5. Pause menu: press Y (left controller) or B (right controller). Select with the laser and trigger. The X and A buttons do nothing.
  6. If they drop the lantern out of reach, it comes back by itself after a few seconds.

During the session

  1. If they are heading the wrong way, turn them round gently, or tell them which way to face. They can't leave the front yard, the house and the garden behind it.
  2. Keep them in Glass Angels. No other apps, no Quest home menu, no browser, no settings. If they end up in the Quest home (usually a tap on the Meta button), take the headset back and reopen Apps → Unknown Sources → Glass Angels.
  3. Tell them to look for clues to what happened to Helen and Koos. Listen to the radio in the sitting room.
  4. The letter in the kitchen is the key. Nothing ends until they pick it up and hear it read. If they're stuck, say “Go to the kitchen and pick up the letter.”
  5. The kitchen candles won't light until the kitchen door has opened.
  6. After the letter, someone whispers “Psst, up here.” Tell them to look up at the sun on the kitchen ceiling and to stay in the kitchen: if they walk out, the video starts again.
  7. Then the house dissolves into a white space with four sculptures. They walk towards each one to hear it. After the credits it goes back to the start screen by itself.

Resetting

Any of these takes it back to the start screen. Standing/Sitting and subtitle settings are kept.

  1. Pause menu → Restart. Open the menu with Y or B. Only works after Begin.
  2. Take the headset off and wait. After 60 seconds off someone's head, it fades out and resets by itself. Only after Begin.
  3. Staff reset: with nothing in either hand, squeeze both grips and both triggers hard for 3 seconds. No confirmation. It won't work while the lantern is held, so let go of it first.
  4. At the end of the credits it resets by itself.

Between visitors

  1. Never leave a headset lenses-up near a window or in the sun, not even for a moment.
  2. Clean the lenses with the microfibre cloth only. Nothing else touches the lenses: no wipes, no spray, no sleeves.
  3. When you can, wipe the face cushion and the controllers with disinfectant. Let them dry before the next visitor.
  4. Feel the headset. If it's hot, swap it out and let it cool.
  5. Check the headset battery. Make sure it's plugged into the pack.
  6. Check the controller batteries and swap any that are low.
  7. Loosen the strap back to a middle setting and check the lenses are seated.
  8. Set Standing or Sitting for the next visitor.
